Paying Off an Account in Collections

A few months ago I noticed an account on my credit report for around $57 that was put into collections.  Because I never received a bill from the original creditor (a dentist's office I went to twice years ago), I sent a dispute letter and the account was validated.  I'm now wondering if I should just pay off the collection's agency or if I should try and settle this with the dentist's office.  How does this work?  If I pay the dentist's office, how would this get reported on my credit report?  Do I need to call the collection's agency after I've paid the dentist and have them remove their account from my report?  I'd like to pay this as soon as possible but I want to make sure I'm doing it the right way.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks!
